Screens, Slouching, and Summer Posture for Kids
Jun 23, 2026
Summer break is wonderful, but it’s also when screen time tends to creep up. Long unstructured days, hot afternoons indoors, and a tablet that’s always within reach add up to a lot of hours curled over a small screen. For growing bodies, all that hunching deserves a little attention.
You may have heard the term “tech neck.” The idea is simple: when we look down at a phone or tablet, the head tips forward, and the muscles of the neck and upper back have to work hard to hold it there. The human head is heavy, and the more it juts forward, the more strain those muscles carry. Kids are doing this during years when their posture habits and growing bodies are still forming — which is exactly why it’s worth being mindful now rather than later.
The good news is that the fix is mostly movement, not restriction. A few easy family habits help a lot: take regular screen breaks to stand, stretch, and look up; raise devices toward eye level instead of dropping the head down to them; and — most powerful of all — trade some screen time for active outdoor play, which naturally undoes a lot of hunching.
This is also where gentle pediatric chiropractic fits. Care focuses on supporting a spine that moves well and helping the body handle the postural demands of modern kid life. It supports comfortable, healthy function alongside the everyday basics that matter most.
The biggest lever you have is the simplest: get them outside. Bikes, creeks, climbing trees, backyard games — Valley summers are made for it, and active play is the best posture support there is. Screens in moderation, movement in abundance.
At Valley Family Wellness & Chiropractic, we love helping families keep growing bodies moving well. If summer screens have your kiddo slouching and stiff, we’re here to help!
