Omega-3s: A Simple Add for the Whole Family
Jul 28, 2026
Omega-3s are an important supplement to understand for your family’s health. You've probably seen "omega-3" stamped on everything from fish oil to egg cartons to your kid's cereal. They're some of the most studied nutrients we have, they support a lot of what your body does every single day, and most of us just don't get enough from food.
Omega-3s — especially the forms called EPA and DHA, found mainly in fatty fish — are building blocks your body uses across the board. They support normal heart and brain function, contribute to a healthy inflammatory balance, and DHA in particular is important for brain and eye development, which is why it matters so much in pregnancy and early childhood.
Modern diets, however, tend to be heavy in omega-6 fats (from processed and fried foods and certain oils) and light in omega-3s, unless you’re eating fatty fish a couple of times a week. Most families aren’t. That imbalance is a big part of why omega-3s come up so often in nutrition conversations.
Food first is always the best starting point: salmon, sardines, mackerel, and trout are excellent sources, and walnuts, chia, and flax offer a plant form (ALA) your body partially converts. If fish isn’t a regular thing in your house, a quality fish oil — or an algae-based option for plant-based families — is a reasonable way to fill the gap.
Omega-3s are one of those quiet, foundational supports worth getting right for the whole family. If you’d like help deciding whether food alone is covering you or a supplement makes sense, that’s an easy conversation to have at Valley Family Wellness & Chiropractic.
